Chillicothe Elementary School – Sensory Room

Chillicothe Elementary School – Sensory Room

A sensory room at Chillicothe Elementary School opened this year to help children on the spectrum. Director of Special Services Emily Schmidt says the room was made possible with help from the Rotary Club of Chillicothe. She says Pam Jarding played a key role in getting the project off the ground.

Rotary contacted the school to fund the hall.

Schmidt says the room currently accommodates six children, but with the number of students at CES increasing next year, she expects that number to reach around 15.

Angela Polling from Rotary said they provided a variety of items for the room.

Including crash pads, an indoor swing, textured objects, lights and busy objects for the hands.

Schmidt said it was not a school-funded project and the work was done primarily by Rotary.

They wrote the grant and assembled the items, painted, and even the CHS Rotary Club helped with the project.

Schmidt says materials were also purchased for teachers to borrow for their classes and for students who need them, as well as books to read aloud to help students understand classmates with dementia. autism or other related disabilities.
