Downtown classic car show canceled in St Helens

Downtown classic car show canceled in St Helens

Organized by St Helens Council and the St Helens Classic Car Association, classic car shows have been popular events in St Helens and Earlestown over the years.

Featuring a wide range of vintage vehicles and classic motors, the event is a notable attraction in the calendar and has attracted crowds of all ages.

However, it has been confirmed that the event in St Helens town centre, usually scheduled for August, will not go ahead this year.

St Helens Council has confirmed the usual event will not go ahead this year due to “consistent budget cuts” from central government.

However, many of the vintage vehicles will be on display at the St Helens Heritage Festival, which takes place on Saturday May 25.

Following on from the success of last year’s festival, the event will highlight the town’s proud industrial history, the borough’s historic influence on the railways and the glory days of the Saints throughout the 151 years of club history.

Vintage vehicles, including a classic bus donated by the North West Road Museum of Transport, will be on display in Victoria Square.

The council also had to withdraw the normal level of support for the classic car event in Earlestown, although this was saved and revamped by the Newton and Earlestown Community Group.

With classic cars lining Oxford Street and Market Street, the Earlestown town center event is set to take place from 10am on Saturday 6 July.

A St Helens Borough Council spokesperson said: “The St Helens and Earlestown Classic Car Shows have been organized by the St Helens Classic Car Association for several years with the support of the council.

“While we are unable to provide the same level of support as in previous years due to continued budget cuts, we are working with association members to identify ways in which these popular events will continue to take place in St Helens and Earlestown town centers.”
