Cillian Murphy breaks silence on new 28 Days Later movie

Cillian Murphy has broken his silence on 28 Years Later, the third installment of the post-apocalyptic horror series.

The sequel to 28 Days Later & 28 Weeks Later was announced last month, with director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland teaming up again.

Murphy, who played Jim in the first 2002 film, did not return for 28 Weeks Later in 2007, but revealed to Variety that he would happily reprise his role for the next installment.

“I can’t give much more at this point,” he began. “But I always said I would love to be involved because that movie changed everything for me – I have great affection for it and for those guys (Alex and Danny). I never watch my own movies except this one -there.

“It’s always around Halloween and during the pandemic people were constantly sending me clips. And I showed it to my children. He’s really held his own, even though he’s 22 now, so I’m really excited that we can get the band back together to do this one.

Murphy’s role in 28 Days Later saw his character emerge from a coma to discover that the world was now ravaged by a highly contagious disease, leading to the collapse of civilized society.

A new film in the series had long been mooted before its official announcement, with Boyle revealing in 2022 that Garland had already written a script for a project titled 28 Months Later.

“It’s actually a really good time. It’s funny, I hadn’t thought about it until you said it, and I remembered, “Bang, that script!” which takes place again in England, and which talks a lot about England. Anyway, we’ll see… who knows? he teased.

28 years later is currently in development.
