Handcuffed suspect caught after an hour and a half on the loose in Aiken County

SALLEY, SC (WRDW/WAGT) – A man who had an active arrest warrant escaped arrest and led officers on a chase for nearly two hours, authorities learned Tuesday.

Aiken County deputies say they responded Friday to the 100 block of Inkberry Road after being told that Antonio Cheatham, 37, of Aiken, had an active warrant for his arrest and was living there.

Deputies said when they arrived, they found several people who repeatedly said Cheatham was not there.

When the Wagener Police Chief spoke with the individuals, they admitted that Cheatham was in the home and allowed them to check the residence, according to authorities.

Authorities say they found Cheatham in a small room behind several laundry baskets, hiding under clothes.

Authorities say Cheatham resisted arrest.

Upon being transferred, Cheatham escaped from Wagener police and ran through the yard while still handcuffed, authorities said.

Authorities say a team of dogs and a team of drones helped locate Cheatham after an hour and a half. He was lying behind farm equipment, authorities said.

Cheatham was arrested once again and transported to the Aiken County Detention Center where his warrant would be served, authorities say.

He was charged with attempted escape, resisting arrest, petit or simple theft and driving under suspension, according to jail records.
