National Police Week: A Message from the Duluth Police Chief

DULUTH, Minn. — Law enforcement agencies across the country are paying tribute and remembering lives lost in the line of duty.

It’s part of National Police Week and Duluth Police Chief Mike Ceynowa said 58 law enforcement officers have been killed in the line of duty so far this year. In the history of the Duluth Police Department, 6 officers have been killed. This year, Ceynowa says there have been 8 incidents that left 14 police officers injured.

In a social media post Tuesday, the chief asked citizens this question. “Please take the time this week when you see our staff out and about to just do a simple gesture so they know how much you appreciate them. Thanks, Duluth. We appreciate your support. And we hope we all stay safe.

According to the National Fraternal Order of Police, a record 378 police officers were shot while on the job in 2023, a 14% increase from the previous year.
