Why are new Laxmi-Ganesh idols bought for Diwali?

New Laxmi-Ganesh idols purchased for Diwali are traditionally made of clay. Idols made of metals such as gold, silver or brass are not replaced. Normally, idols used during festivals like Ganeshotsav or Durga Puja are immersed within ten days, but Laxmi-Ganesh idols used during Diwali are kept throughout the year.

In ancient times, clay idols were commonly used for worship. These idols would deteriorate, break or lose their appearance throughout the year. So, during the auspicious occasion of Diwali, the old idols would be immersed and new idols brought for puja. This tradition continued, with it becoming a custom to buy new idols every Diwali.

When should you buy Laxmi-Ganesh idols?

The most auspicious day to buy new Laxmi-Ganesh idols for Diwali is on Dhanteras. Along with purchasing other items, devotees also purchase idols on this day. This year, Dhanteras will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, and Diwali will be celebrated on October 31, 2024.
