A 19-year-old Walmart employee was found dead in a mysterious incident that allegedly involved a large oven.

Police responded to calls of a “sudden death” at a store in Halifax, Nova Scotia, around 9:30 p.m. Saturday, and found a woman deceased.

The location of the store where her body was found was not immediately released.

Multiple sources told Global News that his death was linked to a large furnace that was running at the time.

Cars line the parking lot and a woman walks with a shopping bag in front of a Walmart store on Mumford Road in Halifax.

Walmart Canada has not commented on the oven or details of the death at the Mumford Road store.

“We are heartbroken and our deepest thoughts are with our associate and his family,” Walmart spokeswoman Amanda Moss told CBC News.

“We extend our sincerest condolences to those who were closest to them.”

Halifax Regional Police Officer Martin Cromwell called the investigation ‘complex’.

“We just want to encourage the public to be patient with our investigation and be aware that there are family members and co-workers involved,” he said Monday afternoon.

Police have not said whether they suspect criminal activity.

The store was closed on Sunday and Monday.

Although the woman’s identity has not been released, the Satnam Singh Randhawa Maritime Sikh Society said she was a member of that religious community.

“It’s very distressing, you know, young people come here with all kinds of hopes and dreams and they’re working hard and then this is what happens,” he told CBC News.

The victim’s cause and manner of death are pending.

It is the latest death involving a worker at a corporate network.

In May 2023, the body of an Arby’s worker was found in a freezer inside a fast food restaurant in New Iberia, Louisiana. The woman’s death was considered suspicious.

Walmart has made recent U.S. business headlines as the department store and discount hypermarket chain has closed 11 stores so far this year in California, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, Ohio and Wisconsin.
