Hstoday Biden-Harris Administration Announces Revolutionary AI Principles for Worker Well-Being

The Department of Labor announced the release of a wide-ranging set of principles that provide employers and developers who create and deploy artificial intelligence with guidance for designing and implementing these emerging technologies in ways that improve the quality of employment and protect workers’ rights.

Developed as a result of President Biden’s executive order on the safe, secure, and reliable development and use of artificial intelligence, this initiative highlights the administration’s commitment to ensuring that AI technologies enhance empowerment and well-being of workers while addressing risks to workers.

“Workers must be at the heart of our nation’s approach to developing and using AI technology,” said Acting Secretary Julie Su. “These principles announced today reflect the Biden-Harris Administration’s belief that, in addition to complying with existing laws, artificial intelligence must also improve the quality of work and life of all workers. As employers and developers implement these principles, we are committed to creating a future where technology meets the needs of people first and foremost.

Specifically, AI principles emphasize ethical development; transparency in its use; meaningful worker engagement in system design, use, governance and monitoring; protection of workers’ rights; and using AI to improve work.

The Department remains committed to monitoring the impact of AI on the workforce and working with businesses, unions and other stakeholders to protect and empower workers. As part of this effort, the ministry will soon provide employers and developers with best practices to consider when implementing AI principles.
