Drivers stop traffic on busy Los Angeles highway to capture loose dog

Los Angeles is well known for Hollywood, the wealth there and its traffic. As a born and raised Southern Californian, I know from experience that almost any time you drive in Los Angeles, you can expect to find yourself in bumper-to-bumper traffic and going nowhere quickly. ABC7 shared video on Tuesday (May 21) of a dog that somehow managed to climb up and then run onto the 110 Freeway near Chinatown in the middle of the day, stopping traffic.

Drivers stopped traffic and many of them tried to catch the fast dog. The dog ran at full speed, without any worries! Watch as the dog is finally captured, safe and sound.

Fortunately, the dog was caught unharmed and had quite an unforgettable adventure! ABC7 commenters left nearly 500 comments on the video. @Angelic Guerrera shared, “I love that so many people are joining forces and helping to keep him safe – the best people!!!” and @Dean Reutter added: “I was almost scared to watch the video. Thank goodness they got him and no one was hurt.”

While the dog was safely recovered, CBS News spoke to the California Highway Patrol who said they regularly receive calls about animals on highways. Officer April Elliot explained, “Unfortunately, animal calls are common in the Los Angeles area. Often dogs, pets or other animals are heading onto the highway or are abandoned and the CHP is responding to assist, to ensure roads are clear and safe and if possible, catch the animal and take it to a local animal shelter,”

The dog was determined to be a stray and taken to the North Central Animal Shelter. He was not microchipped and was unclaimed. There, he was just one of hundreds of other dogs and cats waiting to find a forever family. This dog’s story has a happy ending! KTLA reported that the dog, now named Bailey, was adopted just days after his adventure!

Bailey’s new parents, John and Joey, had no idea how Bailey ended up at the shelter and had not seen the video. John told KTLA, “It was crazy because when we got him they just said he was a stray! I’m not surprised people saw him and wanted to help him.”

The couple went on to say that the connection with Bailey was instant and they knew he would be a perfect companion for their other dog named Eve. “The wonderful staff at the North Central Animal Shelter said they were not used to seeing a dog bond so quickly.” John and Joey hope their story will inspire others to adopt: “All the wonderful people who took the time to stop and take the time to get him treated and take him to an animal shelter, we Couldn’t be more grateful.”

Like most shelters across the country, Los Angeles’ shelter system is currently overcrowded and overburdened. If you’re considering bringing home a new pet, consider adopting one from a shelter – you could literally save a life.
