Tired of cicadas? Well, don’t worry, you should hear a little less noise from them soon.

Some Tennessee communities have spent the last month listening to Brood XIX cicadas scream at the top of their lungs in hopes of attracting a mate, but I hope this ~~wonderful~~ the sound will soon turn off…literally. The brood was not expected to emerge in Tennessee until mid-May, but Middle Tennessee residents began to notice their presence in early May.

So when will these insects die and go into hibernation again?

How long should Brood XIX cicadas exist?

Not too long. The 13-year-old cicadas should keep us company until about mid-June. But some may not die until July, depending on when they appeared.

The average lifespan of cicadas is about five weeks above ground, but some species only live three to four weeks. During this time, the cicadas mate, the females lay eggs in the trees, which then fall to the ground and burrow for another 13 years.

How often do two broods of cicadas emerge at the same time?

Not often, as it hasn’t happened since 1803, according to the University of Connecticut. Here are some other facts.

For the first time since 2015, a 13-year-old brood will emerge in the same year as a 17-year-old brood.
For the first time since 1998, adjacent broods of 13 and 17 years old will emerge in the same year.
For the first time since 1803, Brood XIX and XIII will co-emerge.
