California launches Ready.ca.gov ahead of holiday weekend

California Governor Gavin Newsom visited the state’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) on Friday to announce ready.ca.gov, a one-stop shop to help state residents prepare emergencies and extreme weather conditions.

The new site is part of Listos California, a state effort to help communities prepare for and recover from emergencies.

“California is prepared for summer and peak wildfire season – with increased firefighters and equipment, better forest management, and one of the most proven emergency management systems in the world “Newsom said in a statement. “Make sure your family is prepared too. Visit ready.ca.gov – a new resource to help keep California safe this weekend and all summer.

Listos California includes a wealth of information, available in multiple languages, to deliver vital messages to Californians through interactive and community-based strategies such as peer-to-peer phone banking and in-person events, according to a press release from Cal OES.

Among the takeaways for Californians is the importance of preparing for extreme heat, for which Listos California recently began its summer messaging work, including the wildfire awareness campaign for rural communities.

The agency also called on state departments and agencies to promote water preparedness as California’s waterways, supported by snowmelt, increase in both water and velocity, which creates very cold and dangerous conditions. Agencies promote drowning prevention messages in more than a dozen languages available in Listos California.
