The Bring the Boom Dance, Explained: How AJ and Big Justice Inspired the Celebration of NFL, NBA, NCAA and More Stars

There is a new dance trend that is sparking interest among athletes young and old.

Its originator? An 11-year-old Costco enthusiast.

If you’ve been on social media over the past few months, you’ve probably been greeted by a familiar sight. An enthusiastic teenager and his vivacious father test various parts of Costco’s much-vaunted cuisine.

Big Justice and AJ are two of the biggest figures in meme land. This distinction comes with a number of advantages, one of which seems to be inspiring to emulate by a large part of the population – including sports stars.

Quinn Ewers, Jake Bates, and – most recently – Tyrese Haliburton have all paid homage to Big Justice and his eye-catching dance moves in recent games. But where did the template come from? And how did it turn into a sensation of its own?

Sporting News has the answer to these and many other questions about the “Bring the Boom” dance. Without further ado, here’s what you need to know about the Big Justice dance, a waltz unlike any other.

Bring on the Boom dance, explained

Big Justice — the pseudonym of 11-year-old internet personality Eric Befumo — conjured Bring the Boom seemingly out of nowhere, combining the harrowing image of a person flexing their enemies with the joyful elegance of the Rockettes.

The result? A dance that took social media – and, by proxy, the world of sports – by storm.

Big Justice and his family are die-hard Yankees fans. So it’s no surprise that the lines between the dance floor and the playing field are a little blurred.

After conquering the web with those eye-catching Costco appearances, Big Justice and AJ took to the booth, trying to create a track that showcases everything they do. What came out was “We Bring the Boom,” a short but sweet offering that Chopin and Bach would be proud of.

The song dropped in July. Dancing came soon after, persuading legions of loyal disciples to flex their biceps and kick their feet to follow their favorite content creator.

Athletes were no exception.

Lately, it seems like the entire sports world can’t get enough of Big Justice. Whether it’s Quinn Ewers, Jake Bates and Haliburton or the Knicks and the Florida Atlantic football and baseball teams, many sportspeople have been captivated by Big Justice’s movements.

Can you really blame them?

“We were trying to have fun,” Ewers said after performing a rendition of the dance against Oklahoma on Oct. 14. “Shout out Big AJ, shout out Big Justice.”
