Rangers hero in shock, Celtic claim as he questions Brendan Rodgers loyalty

Ally McCoist has sowed doubt over Brendan Rodgers’ long-term future at Celtic.

The Hoops boss – fresh from a Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup double – returned to the club last year to replace Ange Postecoglou following his move to Tottenham for a second spell in the Parkhead hot seat. His first departure sparked fury from the Celtic faithful as he left mid-season to take the top job at Leicester City.

His return to the club last summer was accompanied by mixed emotions, with many supporters not ready to forgive the 51-year-old for the way he left the first time around. He began to repair those relationships with a successful season on the park and another Champions League adventure heading to the east end of Glasgow next season. However, Rangers hero McCoist would NOT be shocked if Rodgers left for a return to English football once again in the future as he responded to a message from a listener who thinks the Irishman is waiting for an opening and waiting his time with the Scottish champions.

McCoist told talkSPORT: “There’s an element in me that thinks Brendan will want to move on again. I honestly believe that. Of course, he’s had a very successful season winning a league and cup double .It goes without saying and his CV is back up there again.

“We’ve seen in recent years Scottish teams competing at a very high level and it’s almost impossible for them to get into the Champions League. And I just think Celtic would be exactly the same next year.

“I know for a fact that there is still a section of the Celtic support – no matter what Brendan does – who will not be happy with his return to Celtic for the way they view the way he left in the first place. For me, I think Alistair (the listener) makes a great point and it wouldn’t be a shock to me at all if Brendan left and went back south.”

Jeff Stelling added: “I don’t know if Brighton are interested or not. But Brendan’s reputation with younger players, well, that would suit Brighton perfectly. However, we’ll see…”
