Ellenwood man sentenced to 20 years for assaulting stepfather

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – An Ellenwood man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to assaulting his stepfather, according to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office.

The district attorney’s office said 53-year-old Jarvis Oneal Cloption was staying with his 72-year-old stepfather after being released from jail. On September 4, 2020, around 1 a.m., while his stepfather was sleeping, the district attorney’s office said Cloption assaulted him and demanded money.

Cloption began stabbing his stepfather repeatedly in the face, neck and under his arm before throwing him to the ground and stealing his wallet, the DeKalb County Prosecutor’s Office said.

The district attorney’s office said the victim’s friend also stayed at the home and tried to intervene after hearing cries for help, and was also stabbed in the face, arm and the back of the head.

Cloption’s stepfather was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and his friend to Atlanta Medical Center to be treated for their injuries.

Cloption pleaded guilty Nov. 1 to two counts of abuse of an elderly person and three counts of aggravated assault, the district attorney’s office said.
