Ground stop at O’Hare as thunderstorms hit Chicago area – NBC Chicago

The FAA has lifted its shutdown at O’Hare International Airport, but significant delays are still being reported on flights departing from Chicago.

According to the latest information from the FAA, flights were held at their respective airports during the initial downpours and storms, but the ground shutdown was lifted around 4 p.m.

At O’Hare, delays averaged about 90 minutes for flights departing from Chicago, according to the FAA website.

There will also be delays in arrivals, with flights held up at originating airports due to conditions in Chicago.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue to develop throughout the afternoon, with the city of Chicago and its surrounding suburbs at a “marginal” risk of severe weather, according to the Storm Prediction Center.

The main storm threats developing will be gusty winds, although hail and heavy downpours are also possible, with “special weather statements” appearing across the region.

This threat of severe weather is expected to continue into the evening, with cooler and drier conditions expected on Wednesday.
