Pelham may revoke licenses of 2 bars over gambling allegations

Pelham city leaders later this month will consider revoking the business licenses of two bars, allegedly for illegal gambling.

The City Council has scheduled public hearings for Monday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m., at Lil Bits Tavern on County Road 52 and Pub 261 on Helena Road. The hearings will take place at Pelham City Hall.

The council will hear testimony on whether the licenses should not be revoked, according to the notice.

A city spokesperson said Pelham has received reports of entry-level bingo games with cash prizes taking place at both businesses — two nights a week at one and three nights a week at the other.

The reports only recently came in, she said, and the alleged activity does not include machines.

“Shelby County does not have an amendment that allows bingo,” the spokesperson said.

Efforts to contact representatives from Lil Bits Tavern and Pub 261 were not immediately successful.
