At least four people were killed in a horrific road accident along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway on Monday, November 4, involving two trucks.

Police said the accident that occurred near Sachangwan involved a truck transporting firewood to Nakuru and a canter transporting tomatoes to Eldoret.

Police said the accident occurred at 11pm when the truck carrying firewood collided with an oncoming canter carrying tomatoes.

The accident caused a huge traffic jam as police worked to clear the site.

Police said three of the dead were on board the truck carrying firewood, while the fourth was in the other truck.

Another person was injured in the accident. The vehicles were towed to a nearby police station pending investigation.

The accident comes barely three days after another accident occurred in Salgaa in Migaa around the double bridge, in which several people were injured after a truck transporting timber lost its brakes and hit a matatu.

According to the latest statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), road accidents in Kenya are on the rise.

In 2023, more than 4,300 people died in road accidents, while the remaining 22,885 people were involved in accidents with life-changing injuries.

The NTSA estimates that 3,000 people die in road accidents every year, with many of the accidents occurring on weekends, during festivities and on public holidays.

A campaign has been launched to tackle the menace.
