CPD Supt. Larry Snelling said officers stopped and approached the vehicle with three people inside. At that moment, someone inside fired shots, hitting the 26-year-old officer several times. Another person in the vehicle was also fatally shot.

Snelling said at one point an officer on the scene fired his weapon. Detectives are still analyzing the firearms of the officers involved in Monday night’s incident, he added.

The suspected gunman attempted to flee on foot but was later taken into custody, Snelling said. A third person, who was in the back seat of the car, was arrested at the scene.

Fellow officers took the injured officer to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. He had served with the CPD for just under three years, Snelling said.

Officers found two weapons at the scene.

One of the weapons was in the possession of the person who suffered fatal gunshot wounds in the vehicle. The other weapon is a semi-automatic weapon with an extended magazine.

Neighbors who did not want to appear on camera told ABC7 they heard gunshots before seeing officers swarming the scene.

Several streets surrounding the crime scene were cordoned off as police continued their investigation Monday evening.

A massive police presence was also seen outside the hospital at East 57th Street and South Cottage Grove Avenue.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability responded and the Mobile Command Post also responded to the scene.

Snelling said CPD is not yet releasing the officer’s name to allow his family to grieve.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson also spoke at Monday night’s news conference, and he and Snelling asked Chicagoans to keep the officer’s family in their thoughts.
