The family by a 10 year old girl who died after being attacked by them dog has paid tribute to an “amazing” daughter.

Savannah Bentham, who had a “close relationship” with the family pet, suffered serious injuries after being bitten in their home in the vicinity of the market town Malton in North Yorkshire.

Emergency services were called at 4pm on Friday, but despite the best efforts of medical professionals and the public, the girl died at the scene.

An investigation is underway into what happened and police said one line of inquiry is into the dog’s behaviour, to try to find out why it attacked.

On Monday, the girl’s family said in a statement released through North Yorkshire Police: “We are utterly shocked and devastated by what has happened to Savannah. We can’t believe we lost our wonderful girl, who we love so much.

“We thank everyone for their support and kindness as we struggle to come to terms with our loss.

“We ask that our family’s privacy be respected as we mourn Savannah.”

Police have confirmed that the dog, whose breed has not yet been identified, will be destroyed.

A police spokesperson said: “One of the lines of inquiry relates to the dog’s behavior to help explain, as far as possible, why it attacked the girl.

“All evidence so far suggests it was out of character for the girl, as the girl and the dog had a close, loving relationship.”

A post-mortem examination was carried out on Sunday evening and an inquest will begin in the coming days.

The police spokesperson added: “Our thoughts remain with the girl’s family and friends at this very worrying time.

“We also urge people not to speculate about the incident, to respect the family’s privacy and allow them to grieve in peace.

“We will provide more information as soon as we are able.”
