Colleagues recall that the El Paso teacher died in a drunken driving crash

Colleagues remember the El Paso teacher who — along with her future husband — died Saturday in a drunken driving crash.

According to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, 28-year-old Dalia Olivas and her fiancé, 29-year-old Rick Ballard, were killed after a crash at the intersection of Rojas and Eastlake on Saturday evening.

On Monday, the principal of Triumph High School-El Paso West, where Olivas worked, spoke to KFOX14/CBS4.

Principal Francisco Chavez said Olivas had worked at the school as an English teacher since 2022.

Chavez said Olivas shared her plans with him over the summer.

He said Olivas said she would not return the following school year because she planned to move from El Paso with her fiancé.

Chavez also shared more school photos of Olivas, which you can view in our gallery at the top of this story.

The sheriff said the driver of the other vehicle — who has yet to be identified — will be arrested and charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter once he is released from the hospital.

The driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries, but authorities have not yet updated his condition.
