During the T20 World Cup match between India and Pakistan in New York on June 9, a plane carrying the message ‘Free Imran Khan’ was spotted above the stadium. The plane carrying the message ‘Release Imran Khan’ was seen flying over the match venue in Nassau, New York, USA. Earlier this month, the Islamabad High Court acquitted Imran Khan and quashed his conviction, but he will remain in jail in another case. He will remain in prison and serve a seven-year sentence for another case related to his marriage to his third wife. The state secrets case is one of four cases in which Khan was convicted just before Pakistan’s February national elections. Imran Khan was sentenced to 10 years in prison for leaking state secrets, commonly known as the encryption case. He has been in jail since August last year (2023) and his party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has been banned from contesting elections. Despite being excluded from the February elections, candidates supported by imprisoned Imran Khan nevertheless won the largest number of seats. There were not enough of them to form the government, which was instead led by an alliance of rivals led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
