St. John’s College offers free summer lecture series in Santa Fe this July

SANTA FE, New Mexico (KRQE) – St. John’s College Graduate Institute invites the public to attend a free summer lecture series. Five conferences will be offered until July.

The courses, as described by St. John’s College, are as follows:

  • 1st of July: (4:15 p.m.),Dr. Daniel Breyer, professor of philosophy, Illinois State University, “Intercultural Philosophy as a Great Conversation”
    • “In this talk, I will explore the nature of cross-cultural philosophy, comparing it to superficially similar approaches to philosophy (such as comparative philosophy, intellectual history, and world philosophy) and arguing that we should consider intercultural philosophy. like a big conversation. To make this case, I will also explore different ways of thinking about what philosophical conversations are and what might make them great,” says Breyer.
  • July 9th : (1:00 p.m.), Steve Isenberg and Mike Peters, “Perspectives on Ukraine”
    • Mike Peters is president emeritus of St. John’s College in Santa Fe. He is a retired Army colonel who served in Vietnam, Operation Just Cause Panama, and Operation Desert Shield. He was also a Soviet-Russian specialist, serving as an attaché in Moscow, as a liaison officer to Soviet forces in East Germany, and at the Pentagon. Before joining St. John’s, he was executive vice president of the Council on Foreign Relations. Steven Isenberg is a former newspaper publisher, chief of staff to New York City Mayor John V. Lindsay, university president and professor of humanities, and executive director of PEN America, the human rights literary group. Isenberg is a senior advisor to the Committee to Protect Journalists and an honorary fellow of Worcester College, Oxford.
  • July 17: (4:15 p.m.), Claudia Hauer, St. John’s College tutor, “Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice”
  • July 24: (4:15 p.m.), April Olsen, St. John’s College tutor, “Nagarjuna”
  • July 31 : (4:15 p.m.), Dr. Duane Roller, professor emeritus of classics, Ohio State University, “On Cleopatra”

“The Graduate Institute is proud to offer this free lecture series to our students, alumni and friends,” said David Carl, associate dean of graduate programs at Santa Fe, in a press release. “While classes at St. John’s typically take place through discussion among students, lectures provide participants with the opportunity to hear a detailed account from someone with considerable knowledge.
