All the changes coming to Mail: priority messages, smart replies and more

During its annual WWDC keynote, Apple unveiled its version of AI, called “Apple Intelligence.” This AI will take care of tasks ranging from creating emojis to new writing tools to help users improve their writing, even in emails.

Apple said these new tools will be accessible throughout the system, “almost anywhere you write,” including Mail, Notes and third-party apps. Here is the functionality introduced:

Priority Inbox

A new “Priority Messages” section will greet users at the top of their inbox, showing them the most important emails, such as dinner invitations or boarding passes. This will eliminate the need to scroll through less urgent messages.

Email summaries in the mail app

Mail will now provide concise summaries alongside emails, allowing users to get the gist without opening the message. Long threads can be mined to reveal key details for closer examination.

Smart response

The Smart Reply feature is currently being upgraded. It will not only suggest quick replies but also identify questions in an email, ensuring users answer everything before hitting send. So instead of finding each question manually from an email, Apple Intelligence will do it for you by presenting you with a questionnaire.

Mail Categorization

Mail will introduce the categorization on the device. Emails will automatically be sorted into categories like

• “Primary” for essential emails,
• “Transactions” for receipts,
• “Updates” for newsletters, and
• “Promotions” for marketing messages.

Something like this has been available in Gmail for years now.

Summary view

Need to quickly receive emails from a specific company? Mail’s new summary view aggregates all emails from that sender, which will allow users to find important updates at a glance.

Rewrite

The Rewrite tool offers different versions of what you’ve written, adjusting the tone depending on the recipient and the occasion. Write a professional cover letter, add a touch of humor to a party invitation or simply refine your message – Rewrite can help you find the perfect wording.

Reread

Grammar, sentence structure and word choice? No problem! Proofreading checks your text and suggests changes with explanations, ensuring that your writing is neat and error-free.
