Naomi Campbell – who grew up in south London – was promoting her upcoming exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum.

The one-of-a-kind exhibition, titled NAOMI: In Fashion, will take place at the V&A South Kensington from Saturday 22 June 2024 to Sunday 6 April 2025.

Naomi grew up in the London borough of Lambeth, around the areas of Brixton and Streatham in south London. She was raised by a Jamaican-born dancer named Valerie Morris, 72.

The superstar’s father left the family when Valérie was four months pregnant with Naomi. She never met her father, whose name does not appear on her birth certificate.

Over the years, Naomi has visited many of her stomping grounds, including visiting south London state secondary school, Elmgreen School, to inspire pupils on how to overcome rejection, in 2019.

Naomi told the young hopefuls: “It feels like I’m coming home.” The same year, the legendary model received the Fashion Icon Award at the 2019 British Fashion Council ceremony.

Receiving this prestigious accolade, Naomi proudly said: “This is a very moving award to receive. »

She continued: “I spend so much time in different parts of the world that people often forget that I’m from Brixton, that I’m a south London girl.”

The fashion star began her career in the early 1980s and will appear on the covers of more than 500 magazines.

The following decade would see the south London star become one of the Big 5 of the modeling world, alongside fellow 90s models Cindy Crawford, 58, Linda Evangelista, 59, Claudia Schiffer, 53 and Christy Turlington , 55 years.

The glamorous collective often featured in iconic music videos together, including late pop icon George Michael’s 1990 music video for his hit single Freedom! ’90, as well as various fashion series and haute couture shows.

Although Naomi still frequently walks runways around the world, she has focused on being a voice for marginalized communities within the fashion world.

In 2013, Naomi, alongside iconic model and wife of the late music icon David Bowie, Iman Abdulmajid 68, and model and activist Bethann Hardison, 81, formed Balance Diversity.

Balance Diversity penned an open letter to the fashion councils of each of the major fashion cities of Milan, Paris, London and New York, encouraging them to address what they saw as a so-called ‘lack of racial diversity’ within the modeling industry.

The Diversity Coalition proved effective when in 2018, Fashion Spot’s diversity reports estimated that “racial diversity in magazines and runway shows reached an all-time high” that year.

Many new models and fashion influencers have publicly mentioned the mother of two as an influence, from stunning South Sudanese-Australian model Adut Akech, 24, to YouTuber and beauty guru Jackie Aina, 36.

In May 2021, Naomi shocked social media by announcing the birth of her daughter. In June 2023, she announced the birth of her son.

Naomi recently confirmed in a recent interview with The Times that she welcomed both of her children via surrogacy.

She said: “My babies are everything to me. They are my priority 110%. I have to be there for them on their first day of school.”
