Lake in the Hills to consider anti-nepotism policy – Shaw Local

Lake in the Hills may soon explicitly ban village employees from supervising or training their loved ones.

The proposed anti-nepotism policy, which officials are expected to vote on this week, is part of a package of changes to the village’s personnel handbook.

Currently, nepotism is not addressed in village registers. No results for the word “nepotism” appear when searching the village’s website or in previous versions of the staff handbook.

According to a draft of the new manual, Lake in the Hills does not prohibit “personal relationships” between employees, but imposes restrictions on them to try to avoid conflicts of interest and nepotism.

A personal relationship is defined in the project as “any relationship arising from marriage, cohabitation, a romantic relationship or any other intimate relationship beyond simple friendship”. It defines nepotism as “the practice of showing favoritism to relatives over others in matters of appointment, employment, remuneration, promotion or advancement by any public official in a position to influence such personnel decisions.

If the proposed policy is approved, it would prohibit employees from supervising or being supervised by a parent or relative. Employees would also be prohibited from training their relatives or loved ones. They would also not be allowed to participate in personnel decisions involving relatives or relatives and, if they have a relationship that could cause a conflict of interest, they are supposed to report it to the village administrator or the police chief, according to the village. documents.

Messages to village officials Monday with questions about the policy were not returned.

The neighboring villages of Huntley and Algonquin have already adopted policies aimed at combating nepotism, according to staff manuals for those villages. Huntley’s policy prohibits elected and appointed officials from being hired by the village in addition to their relatives.

The Lake in the Hills Village Board of Trustees will review the policy Tuesday evening and possibly make changes before a scheduled vote Thursday evening on the change.
