City council buildings observe two minutes of silence for victims of Nottingham bombings

Nottingham City Council buildings will remain silent today (Thursday) in memory of the three victims of the Nottingham bombings on June 13 last year.

Staff will pause for two minutes of silence at 1 p.m. in memory of school caretaker Ian Coates and University of Nottingham students Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar, who were killed early this that morning in 2023 by Valdo Calocane.

Councilor Neghat Khan, Leader of Nottingham City Council, said: “It is difficult to comprehend that a year has already passed since the terrible and tragic events in our city on June 13, 2023. Our thoughts, as always , are going to the families of Ian, Barnaby and Grace, what we know will be an incredibly difficult time for them.

“Three innocent lives were lost that day and they will never be forgotten by the people of Nottingham.

“Council buildings will observe a two-minute silence on Thursday, while I join other local civic leaders in quietly reflecting on this anniversary.”

Thousands of Nottingham residents stood shoulder to shoulder at a vigil in Old Market Square two days after last year’s attacks, to pay moving tribute to the victims.

Civic dignitaries and local figures addressed a large crowd as the city paid tribute to Ian, Barnaby and Grace, as well as those injured or affected, while reiterating the message that Nottingham is a place of love , tolerance and hope.

Councilor Khan added: “I cannot understand the pain and loss that the friends and families of Ian, Barnaby and Grace will continue to feel, and particularly on the anniversary of the terrible attacks last year. last.

“We are all still healing, but we will try to find some comfort this week by being with others and taking time to reflect. Nottingham is a city of love and tolerance – here we look out for each other.

“My deepest sympathies go out to everyone who knew and loved Ian, Barnaby and Grace.”
