Trump visits Capitol for first time since January 6 to meet with Republican lawmakers

John Bresnahan:

Well, it’s… it’s a little different. What Vance and several other senators were saying today was that they were going to expand their blockade against Biden’s nominations.

They – all judicial nominations and all US attorney nominations – or almost all US attorney nominations, they already – they already have to go through a – they’re already being filibustered by the Republicans . But these are high-stakes nominations, and Senate Democrats are prepared to go out there and review them, to go through the process.

It takes time, but they can do it. What Vance said today is that we’re even looking for ceremonial appointments, like Barbara Lee to serve on the U.N. — Barbara Lee, a Democrat from California, to serve on a U.N. advisory board. I mean, it’s a ceremonial position. He’s a congressman. These are generally topics for which they have mutual respect, and this should be adopted unanimously.

But they say if Democrats want to do this, they’re going to have to put in the time. And you can bet that the Democrats won’t do that because they’re going to try to focus on judicial nominations and other more important appointments.

What it is, it’s just another sign that they…again, it’s JD Vance, who’s from Ohio, the Republican senator from Ohio. He’s very interested in becoming vice president, and he’s doing it to help himself with Trump, to help elevate his status with Trump.

And so that’s an important thing – it was an important thing where he’s trying to get his name out there. So that’s what he was trying to do here. Again, it shows how partisan things have become at the Capitol in an election year, a presidential election year, where the White House is up for grabs, the Senate and Congress – the House is up for grabs. to win.

So it’s all just a fight.
