Two men were shot and killed during a car rally in Accokeek, Maryland.

Two men were found fatally shot at a car rally in Accokeek, Maryland, Thursday evening, Prince George’s County police said.

Officers responded around 11:45 p.m. to a reported shooting in a shopping center parking lot in the 7000 block of Berry Road, police said. Two men – Sheldon Proctor, 48, of Waldorf, and Patrick Savoy, 55, of Charlotte Hall, Maryland – were pronounced dead at the scene. A third man was shot and taken to a hospital, police said. His injuries are not life-threatening.

Efforts to reach the victims’ families Friday were unsuccessful, but a woman who identified herself as Proctor’s sister told local TV station Fox5 DC that Proctor used a motorized scooter to accommodate a disability and that he was the “nicest guy” with the “prettiest smile.”

“He loved people, he loved everyone,” she said.

Thursday’s triple shooting is the second fatal car rally incident in recent weeks in Prince George’s County. In May, John Phipps, 26, was the unwitting target of a shooting sparked by a car driver who spun his tires too close in a District Heights parking lot, according to police charging documents.

Although police described the District Heights event as “an illegal event involving reckless endangerment with vehicles, stolen cars, guns and mayhem,” the car rally in Accokeek was a less impromptu affair , according to those who attended.

The car show is one of several regularly scheduled gatherings during the week in Prince George’s County, said Frankie Ibey, 49, a local car enthusiast who attended the car gathering in Accokeek.

Ibey has known about the Accokeek meet-up for more than a decade and said it draws a crowd of older regulars who arrive around 6 p.m. and leave around 9 p.m. Drivers line up their well-maintained cars in rows in the parking lot, with their hoods open. , as people browse it. Many people bring their lawn chairs to sit and hang out with friends and talk about their shared love of vehicles, Ibey said.

Ibey considered going on Thursday, but decided against it because his knee was hurting him and he didn’t want to stay out too late. He spent the morning calling to check if his friends were there.

“It hurts me to know that people are taking out guns,” Ibey said. “You have to know that more people than you want are going to get hurt.”

Police are investigating a motive and working to identify one or more suspected shooters.
