Unusual Blonde Badger Captured by Trail Cam Without Its Stripes

Unusual Blonde Badger Captured by Trail Cam Without Its Stripes

We have seen a white moose, a blond grizzly bear (RIP Nakoda), a white bison, and an albino fur seal, but until today we have never seen a blond badger. In fact, one wildlife professional calls these trail camera images “one in 10,000 things.”

The Essex Wildlife Trust posted the images on Instagram without any specific location information, likely to protect the rare creature. The conservation charity says the blonde badger is an “unusual sight” and its light fur is due to a rare genetic mutation.

Darren Tansley, the trust’s protected species manager, told BBC Essex: “It’s not something unheard of. We encounter many animals of different colors in our countryside. . . but there are very few badgers that have this coloring.

Tansley says the badger is not albino; there is simply less pigment in the skin than usual.

Technically, this blonde badger has stripes, according to Tansley. However, instead of the typical black stripes around its face, this particular badger has very light brown stripes, which are difficult to discern in night vision images.
