When his number was called, Jackson Van De Brake was ready to seize the opportunity

What a moment it was Friday afternoon for Jackson Van De Brake.

The 2024 season did not go as planned for Van De Brake, who went from being an everyday starter as a junior to seeing his role diminish significantly during his senior year.

Even though some players were reportedly frustrated with the changes, Van De Brake remained steadfast, serving as a team captain and valuable leader for this year’s UNC baseball team. The Yakima, Washington, native was patiently waiting for his number to be called, and he was ready for it.

Pinch hitting for Alberto Osuna in the bottom of the ninth in a tie game, Van De Brake hit a line drive double down the right field line. This was a huge momentum shift for the UNC baseball program, as they essentially had three chances to go on the winning run.

Sure, Vance Honeycutt’s single will draw a lot of attention, but Van De Brake’s double made that success possible, as he serves as the unsung hero in the Tar Heels College World Series opening game victory.

To put things in perspective: Van De Brake hasn’t had an at-bat since May 23. Being called up to a place like that on the biggest stage in sports is not an easy thing to do in the first place. , not to mention the circumstances surrounding his lack of at-bats as of late.

Give Jackson Van De Brake credit: he’s been the ultimate team guy for the UNC baseball program. He put the team’s needs ahead of his own and found a way to contribute as much as he could.

Whether it’s cheering on his teammates or coming in late in the game to pinch the run or play defense, Van De Brake’s only goal is to help his team succeed.

On Friday, he was called upon at an important time to take over, and he was more than ready to seize the opportunity when his number was called.
