American Ballet Theater celebrates Pride with performances honoring queer literary icon Virginia Woolf, a silent disco, and more!

LGBTQ fine art fans are in for a treat! On Wednesday, June 26, American Ballet Theater celebrates Pride Night!

This unforgettable evening will include a performance of Wayne McGregorIt is Woolf worksa ballet triptych that depicts the life and works of a queer literary icon Virginia Woolf. The show explores issues of sexuality, identity and gender expression.

Alessandra Ferri, who has been affectionately called “one of the greatest dramatic dancers of all time,” will appear as a guest artist in the opening performance on June 25 and again on June 28 at the Metropolitan Opera House. The former ABT principal dancer joined the Royal Ballet at the age of 17 and was appointed principal dancer of the company when she was just 19. This show, which is part of the celebration evenings of the ABT summer 2024 season, will be dedicated to honoring the iconic Ferri and his inspiring career.

In addition to this exciting onstage performance, American Ballet Theater honors the LGBTQ community with a pride insert in each poster. It speaks to Woolf’s legacy as a queer woman and highlights local LGBTQ organizations.

There will also be an exhibit highlighting ABT’s first hair and makeup supervisor. Leopold Allena black, gay man who was a cornerstone of ABT for over a decade before losing his life to AIDS.

In addition to this, ABT will host a Pride Silent Disco on the Lincoln Center Promenade after the performance, hosted by Connor Holloway And DJ Remeice. Get more information about this free event here!
