Employee Resigns After Boss Gives Unfair Reason For Overlooking Promotion: ‘A Bridge Too Far’

It is a universal problem for employees around the world to face discrimination at work on certain grounds. Especially when it comes to promotion, bosses sometimes don’t see the effort and instead focus on unreasonable justifications. These bosses could face legal action for their discrimination. Recently, an employee dared to quit his job and even felt determined to sue him for it. u/Cold_Market3393 shared on Reddit how their manager had an extremely unfair reason for not offering them a promotion. What frustrated the employee was how a less qualified person was promoted.

The worker began his story by saying, “I will not return to my job. I gave my notice at the end of the day, effective immediately. I will no longer communicate at all with my old job. It turns out that the employee was not considered for promotion because of his “family situation,” even though he had better experience than the person who was offered the promotion. They added: “Tomorrow I will make an appointment with a lawyer to see if I have a claim of discrimination based on family status. I have a copy of the email that my manager’s manager sent me sent shortly after my colleague’s promotion was announced.”

In the email, the manager clearly mentioned that the worker would not be promoted because she wanted to become a mother. “She has a family to support and you don’t,” their manager explained. Just because they chose not to have children, management assumed the worker didn’t need a promotion. “I have been in this position temporarily for a year and a half and my colleague has no management experience,” they stressed. Seeing a less deserving worker being promoted made the employee quite disappointed and frustrated. “I’m so angry that my coworker got a promotion instead of me just because she’s a mom and I’m not,” they added.

It appears the employee was discriminated against by management for not being a mother on several occasions previously. “This is not the first time I have been mistreated at work because I chose not to have children. But this time it was a bridge too far,” they said. Although they were ready to take legal action by meeting with a lawyer about this unfair workplace discrimination, they took to the Internet to share their experience. More than 8,000 upvotes were received and hundreds of users assured that it was great that the worker had proof of discrimination.

“Thank goodness you have real, concrete proof and not a verbal excuse given to you. I sincerely hope you take them to the cleaners and then find a better job elsewhere!” says u/NasaWood12. “I worked at a small company where management was always asking me to work late on projects because everyone had to pick up their kids and take care of them. It’s the same with working vacations. “Well , you’re not married and your family is in a different state,'” u/Nuicakes said. “It’s outrageous, but unfortunately it now seems to be the norm. I had a family member in the Air Force who was going to receive a prestigious award for her work at a hospital, but they gave it to a young single mother who hadn’t received an award. I didn’t even do any work. I’m terribly sorry, I hope you can get what you deserve from this,” one Reddit user added.
