SLED announces the start of free concealed weapons courses in South Carolina

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – As part of the state’s Constitutional Carry law, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division will host free concealed weapons training courses in every county.

State law now requires SLED, a certified concealed weapons instructor or local law enforcement officer, to provide at least two free courses per month in each county.

To comply, SLED has partnered with instructors and a number of agencies across the state to deliver these classes to South Carolinians.

This program is not intended to replace or modify existing classes taught by instructors in the state. It is the same permit program and free for the instruction portion of the course. Citizens can participate in any province, regardless of which region they live in.

There are a number of requirements to participate in the course:

  • Must have a South Carolina driver’s license or own real estate in the state
  • To participate you must be at least 18 years old
  • Must bring a pistol and 25 rounds of ammunition for the shooting portion of the course or make an arrangement in advance to rent a pistol for use during the course

Those who attend the classes receive a minimum of four hours of instruction on firearm safety, self-defense laws and laws surrounding the carrying of firearms. At the end of the program there is a 50-question multiple-choice test and a 25-round qualification course. To pass you must pass with a score of 70% or better.

Anyone who would like to attend and has questions can email [email protected].
