Detroit Pistons make shocking move with Monty Williams

The Detroit Pistons are making another major move this offseason.

According to ESPN Adrian Wojnarowski, the team leaves its head coach Monty Williams after only one season.

Although it was suggested that Williams was safe after the Pistons’ recent hire to the coaching staff, it turns out that is not the case.

This offseason, the Pistons made a change in the front office, adding Trajan Langdon as president of basketball operations. Once Langdon arrived, it became clear that he would have the authority to make changes to general manager Troy Weaver and head coach Williams.

The first order of business for Langdon was to part ways with Weaver as general manager. Although Weaver was offered another job title, he declined. Therefore, Weaver is looking for another opportunity with a different franchise.

The decision to leave Williams comes a few weeks after Langdon’s arrival. Although Williams has five years left on his major contract, which he signed last summer after a stint with the Phoenix Suns, the Pistons will take the franchise in a different direction.

To say Williams’ first season in Detroit didn’t go as planned would be an understatement. While they were still considered a rebuilding franchise last season, they had a league-worst record of 14-68. Once again, the Pistons failed to make the playoffs.

Detroit will immediately begin its search for a new head coach. Meanwhile, Williams’ next move is unclear. Williams was reportedly planning to take a year off after his run with the Suns last year. The Pistons were able to convince him to move to Detroit with an attractive offer. Unfortunately, a difficult first season led to major changes for the Pistons, who will be looking for a new leader to coach Cade Cunningham and the rest of the team.
