Stellantis announces more than 1,100 layoffs in Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Stellantis said Wednesday that about 1,100 employees will be laid off as the company moves to a single-shift operation.

The layoffs are expected to take effect as early as January 5, 2025. A message from UAW leadership to members said this affected the Gladiator JT side.

A Stellantis spokesperson said Wednesday that the move from a two-shift to a one-shift operation is an effort to reduce high inventory levels by managing production to meet turnover.

“These are difficult measures to take, but they are necessary to enable the company to regain its competitive advantage and ultimately return production to previous levels,” the company statement said.

It further said that affected workers will receive one year of supplemental unemployment benefits combined with eligible state unemployment benefits equal to 74% of their wages, along with one year of transition assistance and health care coverage that will continue for two years.

The UAW message to employees said to expect a call from the company about the WARN notice on Wednesday.

“Included in this figure are the company’s plans for job cuts, manpower for tag lightening and figures to reduce JT to one shift. For the JT side, based on order numbers, the company’s plan is still to rotate the workday and afternoon shifts until January 5. On the Wrangled JL side, the company won’t hear from the company about plans for next week until Friday. The complex manager did say that the plan is to run both services from next week.” – UAW leadership statement to employees
