Paint like one of those French girls

Paint like one of those French girls

Oh, to recapture that summer feeling of being young, free and with nothing more urgent than getting out your easel to capture the views.

Songzio creative director Jay Song loves to paint and begins each season creating works that embody his inspiration – usually oil paintings tailored to the brand’s dramatic cut and volume.

But on this suddenly sunny Friday afternoon that followed rainy days in Paris, tomboyish figures trotted about, inspired by her experimentation with a new medium.

“I wanted to do something more childish, more youthful, so I started with some watercolors,” Song said backstage at WWD. “It really was about this young boy in the summer.”

Working with this new medium resulted in a range of pale pinks and blues that soften the brand’s usual blacks and grays. Song couldn’t resist adding a handful of brightly colored prints based on oil paintings.

There were stand-up collar windbreakers, oversized blazers and work jackets, bomber jackets with asymmetrical necklines, paired with wide cropped pants or fitted shorts in combinations that also telegraphed the East-West sartorial mashup with which Song likes to play.

Cut in lightweight options like silk, organza or mesh, these volumes looked light and generous rather than sculptural, aided by clever cuts along the legs or arms that gave them extra movement.

The ambiguity of adulthood was further heightened by the addition of feminine silhouettes, marking the debut of the Songzio women’s line. For the foreseeable future, Song intends to present both lines in January and June, during men’s show season.

At first glance, options like flowy skirts, boat-neck tops, and a tweed mini dress with a sweetheart necklace seemed effortless, but the intricately pleated shorts showed that Song had an eye for the commercial as well as the creative .

For a brand preparing the fall opening of its Parisian flagship, this is not a bad thing.
