How did Tommy Wiseau get his money? 4 Insane Theories About the Writer and Director of ‘The Room’

It certainly doesn’t look like it, but the cult 2003 film Bedroom its creation would have cost 6 million dollars. We know that eccentric writer/producer/director/star Tommy Wiseau financed the infamous project, but like just about everything else about Wiseau, the rest is a mystery.

In a new movie The disaster artist — and the book the new film is based on — it’s clear that Wiseau is flush with cash. But how did he really make his fortune? TBH, no one really knows (except, let’s assume, Tommy himself). While we wait for the enigmatic filmmaker to give the world a clear answer, here are some possible theories (and at least one ridiculous one):

He was a big seller of wigs.

Wiseau won’t say much about where he got the money to make his masterpiece of bad cinema (or where he came from, or how old he is), but he did. said one day Weekly Entertainment that he has had great success in the retail industry. According to the 2008 interview, he operated a clothing import business:

“I’ll tell you a little about it, but that’s all. We import the leather jackets from Korea that we design here in America. If you work, you have to save money, right? I didn’t get money from heaven. I was preparing, let’s put it that way.

It was a real estate flipper

Greg Sestero – Wiseau’s best friend, Bedroom co-star and co-writer of The disaster artist book – said Wiseau told him his money came from selling real estate in San Francisco. Sestero also says that couldn’t be true, although we really wouldn’t let anything pass to Wiseau.

He got a big settlement

On Reddit, at least one user suggested that Wiseau had been cleaning up after being involved in a car accident with a Hollywood power actor. This one seems a bit of a stretch because the information comes from an anonymous source, no one has been able to find any evidence to prove it and, you know, it’s an online discussion forum random. All that aside, the person claims the person responsible for the South Hollywood crash was driving drunk and working for a major production company. Wiseau therefore obtained a huge settlement which allowed him to finance his passion project.

It’s actually DB Cooper

In 1971, a passenger stranded a Northwest Airlines flight, took the stolen $200,000 and parachuted out of the plane, never to be heard from again. The identity of the hijacker, known as DB Cooper, is still unknown, although many have speculated over the years (there has even been talk that Don Draper Mad Men would be revealed as the famous criminal during the series finale). Given Wiseau’s confusing background, it’s not totally It’s shocking that someone floated his name as a possible Cooper, but Wiseau quickly shut down that speculation. Plus, stealing $200,000 still doesn’t add up to $6 million.
