New Delhi: Launching a scathing attack on INDIA bloc parties following the Kallakurichi tragedy in DMK-ruled Tamil Nadu, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday criticized their silence on the issue. The Hooch tragedy has left 56 dead so far.

Addressing a press conference organized by the BJP, MP Sambit Patra criticized the Indian bloc and Congress leaders for not speaking out on this “important issue”. Patra also accused the Stalin government and DMK leaders of being complicit in the tragedy.

He said: “More than 56 people have died and many of them are in critical condition, but around 200 people are still admitted to hospital. This is such an important issue and I am surprised that Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, DMK and all members of INDIA alliance are remaining silent on this issue. If more than 32 Dalits are killed in this country, I would call it murder, it is not death. »

Patra said he hoped INDIA bloc leaders would gather in front of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the Parliament complex and observe silence for the lives lost, wearing black bands on their arms, and show some repentance.

Later in the day, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman criticized the Congress party leadership while highlighting the losses suffered by the Dalit community in the Hooch tragedy.

“More than 200 people are still hospitalized at a critical stage. 56 people died and most of them belong to Scheduled Caste…I condemn the incident. I am shocked that the Congress has not spoken a word against this,” she was quoted as saying by news agency ANI. She also demanded a CBI probe into the matter.

On Saturday, BJP workers in Tamil Nadu staged a protest against the Hooch tragedy even as the Tamil Nadu government ordered a judicial inquiry into the matter.
