Analyzing Broncos’ Cash Commitments to Cornerback Room in 2024

THE Denver Broncos The Broncos have completed the bulk of their roster moves, so we’ll take a closer look at the resources currently devoted to each position group. The next position is cornerback, which the Broncos don’t have a lot of money committed to at the moment, but that can be expected to change.

That of course starts with Patrick Surtain II, who is in his fourth year on his contract as a former first-round pick and whose fifth-year option was exercised by the Broncos. Surtain is entitled to $3.5 million in fully guaranteed money this season, but he is eligible for an extension and could see more money coming his way if he gets one this year.

Next up is Tremon Smith, who is owed $2.5 million, followed by veteran newcomer Levi Wallace, who is owed about $1.3 million, of which $667.5K is fully guaranteed. While both are veterans, neither makes much money.

As for the rest of the cornerbacks, here are the cash commitments for 2024:

The Broncos’ total cash commitments to cornerbacks total just over $14.5 million. This number will, however, change once the final list is established.

As for who is likely to make the roster, Surtain is a sure thing and one would think that Moss and McMillian would have little trouble making the roster. The others are not promised anything, whatever assurances they have received.

Ideally, the Broncos could get rid of Smith and rely on talent that costs a little less. A lot of that depends on who can contribute on special teams, where Smith does his best work.

But even if the Broncos aren’t spending a lot of money at cornerback right now, Surtain’s potential extension will change that. The question is whether he’ll be extended this season or next.

For now, the Broncos can enjoy the benefits of not paying a lot for cornerback production. But given how well Surtain played in his first three seasons, the era of producing cheap cornerbacks won’t last long.
