Meet the Oasa R1, the world’s first robotic mower that brings “golf course perfection” to your lawn – Yanko Design

Reel lawn mowers are categorically known to be better than rotary lawn mowers. They do a better job cutting grass at a low height, are much more energy efficient and can be found on all golf courses for their ability to leave a pristine turf. The problem, however, is that reel lawn mowers are still quite manual. Sure, they run on motors, but you still need a human to push the mower – which seems odd given that robotic lawn mowers have been around for a good 5 years at this point. No one has ever tried to build a robot version of the reel mower (don’t ask me why) until now. The Oasa R1 brings the advancements of autonomous mowers to the perfection of rotary blade cutting. The world’s first robot lawn mower to use a blade reel, the Oasa R1 transforms your garden into a perfectly manicured lawn, with precisely cut grass in every corner. The R1 maps your lawn, cuts grass right to its edges, avoids humans/animals/obstacles and takes care of your entire lawn with just the touch of a button. It will stay away from your precious flower bed, cross paths to access different areas of your lawn, and automatically retreat to its shelter when the job is finished.

Most companies that make robotic lawn mowers prefer rotary mowers given the compactness of the entire mechanism. Reel mowers, while much more powerful, use a much larger drum and blade, resulting in a larger overall product. That didn’t stop Oasa from building the R1, albeit with a surprisingly small product footprint. The R1 bridges the two worlds beautifully, offering all the cutting-edge features of an autonomous mower, with the perfection that a reel blade can provide. The blade’s cutting height can be adjusted by as little as 0.8 inches or as much as 4 inches (depending on how you want to mow your yard), and the R1 has an impressive 13-inch-wide cutting path, covering more ground in less time. A LiDAR sensor hub and multiple cameras allow the R1 to map your lawn as well as detect obstacles. The mower gets to work, choosing the most efficient path to get the job done, while perfectly avoiding obstacles and no-go areas.

An automatic blade sharpening system reduces the need for manual blade replacement or realignment, setting it apart from other robotic and traditional reel mowers.

The reel blade is perhaps the crown jewel of the R1, setting it apart from other robotic mowers. While rotary mowers tend to tear up blades of grass, the R1’s reel blade gives them a clean, scissor-like cut that leaves your lawn looking lush and perfect, and allows the grass to grow back in a healthy and not uneven way. The spiral blades on the spool help it mow the grass instead of tearing it, and here’s the catch, the R1 has its own blade sharpening feature that works automatically between mowing sessions to ensure the blades are as sharp as possible. What’s more, it’s also incredibly quiet, with a working decibel level of less than 60 dB, which is about as loud as a normal conversation.

Using the Oasa R1 is about as easy as using any automated lawn mower. The R1 performs a preliminary 3D scan of your lawn for you, allowing you to determine different areas, paths, fences and even no-go areas. Once you’re done, just press a button to start the R1. It automatically traces its path, cutting precisely near fences and along edges, leaving just a 2-inch gap as it moves along fences, baseboards and walls. It relies entirely on LiDAR to navigate your lawn, avoiding GPS which can sometimes have signal issues. Advanced LiDAR technology allows the R1 to easily bypass and avoid obstacles such as humans, pets, packages, or anything that might block its path. Meanwhile, the large tread wheels allow the R1 to easily climb 45% slopes, allowing it to cover every inch of your lawn, regardless of the terrain. The entire process can be followed on the Oasa smartphone app, which gives you an overview of the mowing progress and allows you to set up on-demand mowing routines/programs. The app also lets you choose mowing height and pattern, as well as activate the R1’s blade sharpening cycle, which only takes a few minutes.

The R1 comes with its own charging shelter where it retreats when its battery is low, when it detects rain, or when it’s finished mowing your lawn. While it doesn’t use GPS while mowing, it does have its own geofence that you set up when you first get the R1: as soon as the R1 leaves the geofence, you’ll receive an anti-theft alert as well as the live location of your lawnmower. Maintenance between mowing routines is also a breeze, thanks to an IPX6 waterproof design that lets you hose your R1 down from either side to remove any grass thatch that might be stuck to it.

The Oasa R1 ships worldwide, with a discounted starting price of $1,199 – this includes the mower itself, as well as the charging shed, a 2-year warranty and even customs fees.
