OROVILLE, Calif. (KHSL) — Deputies arrested a wanted man after a standoff in Oroville at the Super 8 Hotel Monday.

Butte County sheriff’s deputies were in a standoff Monday afternoon with Jeremiah Weed, 39, of Oroville.

The standoff lasted about three hours, with Weed refusing to listen to police orders, who used stun grenades and smoke to eventually force him out of the hotel room.

“BCSO detectives received information that Jeremiah Weed, 39, of Oroville, was staying at the hotel. Mr. Weed is wanted on three felony warrants and a probation violation,” said Megan McMann, public information officer for the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.

The Butte County Sheriff’s Office said Weed was charged with kidnapping and injuring his wife. But this wasn’t his first run-in with the law. This wasn’t the first time Weed had been in a hotel.

Action News Now was on the scene four years ago, on May 12, 2020, at the Budget Inn, just across the street from the Super 8 hotel. Weed was wanted there on multiple charges, including one involving a police chase.

Action News Now was caught on camera during Weed’s arrest Monday.

After Weed was taken into custody Monday afternoon, hotel guests and staff who had been evacuated during the clash were allowed to return. Many were shocked by what happened.

“Until I found out what it was, I was a little nervous. I was sound asleep, and then they started banging on my door and telling me to evacuate. I thought it was a fire,” said one anonymous guest.

“They made us stand in front of the whole building for three hours while they tried to get him out while he was walking out while they were doing all this (pointing to the room) right there. It was pretty scary; we thought they were fighting,” said housekeeper Niki Murray.

Action News Now spoke with one of the maintenance workers at the Super 8 hotel, and they say the mattress and many items in the hotel room, due to substances from the stun grenades that were thrown into the room, will have to be thrown out, and the room will have to be sealed off until it can be repaired.

Several other guests said they were just glad no one was killed or injured during the standoff. A Butte County deputy said Weed will be back in court, but it’s unclear when.

Super 8 staff said the hotel is in contact with the Butte County Sheriff’s Risk Management Team to address the costs of the damage.
