Angel Reese’s 3rd Quarter Message That Helped Sky Defeat Storm

Angel Reese’s 3rd Quarter Message That Helped Sky Defeat Storm

The Chicago Sky continued their early July momentum with an 88-84 victory over the Seattle Storm on Friday night. Chennedy Carter and Angel Reese exploded to set season scoring records and were huge for Chicago down the stretch. Reese hit the game-winning free throws to seal the win. Plus, she made WNBA history by recording her 12th straight double-double. After the game, the rookie forward revealed her third-quarter message that helped Chicago take down Seattle’s veteran team.

The Sky took a multiple-point lead at one point in the third period, but Reese knew his team had to keep its foot on the gas.

“We can’t get comfortable,” Reese said in Chicago. “I feel like we had a lot of leads early in the season and let them slip away. So we tried to stay together in those moments and continue to build the lead and get stops. And I think we did that down the stretch. Fortunately, we had a good lead from the third to the fourth quarter. But I think we still have to do better down the stretch in those last two minutes.”

Reese finished with a career-high 27 points, along with 10 rebounds and two blocks. Her double-double tied Candace Parker’s WNBA record for most consecutive points in league history (12). But Reese said she was simply doing a job her team needed.

“I don’t really think about it. I just go out there and do my job. My job is to bounce back. I know that’s what my teammates expect of me and I’m committed to that,” Reese said. “My teammates are counting on me and I never want to let them down. So whatever happens when I go out there, happens.”

Reese wasn’t the only one playing her role well Friday night.

Chennedy Carter’s season-high 33 points were a big reason the Sky were able to outlast the Storm. The fourth-year guard shot an impressive 62.5 percent from the field and had three steals. Carter credits the work she puts in behind the scenes as what keeps her progressing.

“I work really hard outside of what you see. I really try to focus on my craft every day. I just try to get better, become a better player every day,” Carter said after the game.

Carter makes her attacks to the basket look easy. She explained to us how she manages to get past defenders with such efficiency.

“I’m a bit of a deceiver. I like to read the gaps and the gaps. So as soon as I see what the defense is giving me, I like to take the opportunity. I’m very unpredictable and I think that’s what helps me a lot.”

Chicago will continue to rely on Carter and Angel Reese to continue fighting for a playoff spot. The Sky improved to 8-11 with their win over the Storm. They will close out their road trip with a rematch against the veteran team on July 8.
