Thai Cemetery Holds Film Screening For Dead, Netizens Shocked

There is something undeniably magical about an outdoor movie screening under a breathtaking sky. It is a unique experience that combines the wonder of cinema with a more relaxed atmosphere. The fresh air, starry sky and twinkling lights add a touch of whimsy and romance, often considered one of the best date ideas.

Yet, despite being an ideal outing, an outdoor movie screening in Thailand has left netizens in shock. Believe it or not, a Thai cemetery has been holding movie screenings for the dead. According to a report by the South China Morning Post, the movie screening took place at the cemetery from June 2 to 6. The spooky event was organized by the Sawang Metta Thammasathan Foundation.

In Thailand’s northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima, the cemetery is home to nearly 3,000 descendants. Empty chairs were reportedly set up by cemetery authorities in June, and a movie screening was held for the dead to provide a modern form of entertainment and appease the spirits.

The media outlet also reported that the ghosts, who allegedly attended the screenings, were descendants of Chinese people who lived in Thailand and were unable to return to China.

The screenings reportedly began at 7pm and ended at midnight each day. During the outdoor show, four staff members were also present at the event, in addition to the “expected ghost spectators.” Hold on to your horses. If you think that was the case, then let’s clarify that in addition to the one-time screening of the film, the staff also held a feast for the dead, complete with food, clothing, vehicles, model homes, and other necessities.

The South China Morning Post also mentioned that such film screenings for the deceased are a traditional custom in Thailand, among Chinese communities, after the Ching Ming festival or before the Dragon Boat festival.

The event’s entrepreneur said he was initially afraid of screening films in a cemetery. However, over time, he described his experience as unique and positive.

As soon as the news went viral on social media, people couldn’t hold back and started sharing their views and reactions on the topic. Many called the idea scary, while a few users found the custom intriguing.

“This scary movie screening is actually a very warm idea to please the deceased,” exclaimed one user.
