Meet Sojan Joseph, a Kerala-born NHS nurse and now a British MP

Sojan Joseph, an Indian-origin Member of Parliament in the British Parliament, created history by becoming the first person from Kerala to be elected to the House of Commons. Joseph, born in Kaipuzha, a small village in Kottayam district of Kerala, won the election from Ashford constituency in Kent county. in the UK Elections results announced on Friday.

Working as a nurse since 2002

The 49-year-old migrated to the UK in 2002 after completing his nursing studies in Bengaluru in 2001. and works as a nurse in the psychiatric department of the National Health ServiceJoseph is currently a borough councillor representing the Aylesford and East Stour ward.

House parties

His father, KT Joseph, three sisters and other family members gathered at the family home were overjoyed to hear of his victory. His mother, Elikutty, passed away three months ago, and he was visiting Kerala at the time.

“I am very happy. A Malayalee went there and won. He calls home every day,” his father said proudly. His sisters said Sojan called home after his victory. “He has been there for 22 years. We have all been praying for his victory ever since we heard he was contesting the elections,” one of them said.

I was never interested in politics

Another family member said Sojan joined the Labour Party because it stood for socialist ideals. A sister of Joseph said that when he was at university here, he was never interested in politics.

“It was after he came to the UK that he started taking an interest in politics, and now his dream and ours have come true. Now we are just waiting for him to come to his village,” the sister said.
