Jacob Fowler focused on his preparation, not rushing to the NHL

If there’s one thing that stands out about Montreal Canadiens top goaltending prospect Jacob Fowler, it’s his competitive spirit, but he’s also a creature of habit.

Fowler was asked when he expects to start his professional career and, while he’s eager to do so, his answer was interesting. It would be easy for him to give an answer like when the coaches decide. But Fowler has put the emphasis on development and has no intention of rushing things.

Fowler seems at peace, knowing that his motivation will get him closer to where he needs to be. He doesn’t want to rush, but accepts the journey and works to make sure he’s as ready as he needs to be. It’s a process and the fact that he’s focused on his preparation shows how mature he is.

While he loves the opportunity to feel the pressure and be the one counted on when everything is on the table, he knows the Bell Centre is the biggest stage. And based on his interview response, it’s clear he doesn’t want to let the moment get the best of him. Many goalies have stumbled under the bright lights of the Canadiens’ home arena before, and Fowler isn’t exactly keen on joining that list.

Fowler proved in his first season with the Boston College Eagles that his competitive spirit and winning pedigree were NCAA caliber. The Clark Cup champion has proven himself to be a true prodigy at every level. But to follow up a championship season with an even better performance by moving up a level is no small feat.

Having another season like that would be impressive, but Fowler came so close to a Frozen Four title in his first year, so it’s hard to imagine he’d want to finish his college career before adding another title to his resume. I’m not a betting man, but I think it’s safe to assume Fowler is focused on improving his numbers and record, which would only increase fans’ sense of excitement for their promising future starter.
