Teen describes intimate messages with Regina teacher on trial for sex crimes

Jeffrey Dumba’s trial on sex-related charges continued Wednesday in Regina with testimony from the teenager who said he exchanged sexually explicit photos and videos with the high school teacher.

She described to the court how their Snapchat messaging, then text messages, began in 2021 and became more intimate over two months.

Dumba, 52, is charged with inviting a minor to touch herself sexually, distributing sexually explicit material to a minor and possessing child pornography. He has pleaded not guilty.

The identity of the teenager, who was 15 at the time, is subject to a publication ban.

On Tuesday, when the teenager’s testimony began, the court watched her first interview with police on September 2, 2021. Dumba was arrested the following day.

On Wednesday, Crown prosecutor Loren Klein asked the teen when she met Dumba in person and how she contacted him during the summer months of 2021. The teen said that during the second half of the 2020-21 school year, she began interacting with him at school.

She said that in late June 2021, she added him on one of her Snapchat accounts. She said his username was “jiffdumba” and testified that she did not know it was him. The teen said she sent him a photo of her face and revealed that she was in high school.

She said that before revealing their identities, she sent him “intimate images” and that “within a week” they had shared their identities. She added that they had exchanged phone numbers around that time.

The teenager said Dumba called the situation “the worst possible” because she was a student. She said he sent her a message that said “what’s done is done” and that they could continue to text each other.

The teenager testified that through text messages, the conversations took a more sexual turn. She said she sent between 10 and 15 intimate photos and received between 5 and 10 photos of Dumba’s penis.

The teenager said she sent him sexually intimate videos of herself, but never received any videos from Dumba.

“He would compliment me and tell me things he would do to me sexually if I was there. He would talk about oral sex and then having sex with me,” the teen said.

She told the court that Dumba invited her to his home three times and sent her his address once.

The teenager said that at the beginning of the school year, Dumba asked her not to text him at school and told her “no weird vibes” and that he was in a “happy relationship.”

The Crown showed the girl a file from her phone titled “My Eyes Only” in which she had saved photos which she said showed Dumba’s penis.

The teenager identified a nude photo as hers and another photo of a blanket belonging to her that was taken as evidence. She said the nude photo also included the blanket.

Towards the end of Klein’s interrogation, the teenager broke down as she described the impact the events had had on her, including her relationship with her mother and her experiences at school.

“Once that happened, my life was destroyed. I lost friends. I lost my high school experience. I lost the trust and support of my parents.”

On Wednesday afternoon, Dumba’s attorney, Darren Kraushaar, cross-examined the teenager.

He asked her about a classmate and former friend who testified Monday that the teen showed him images, leading the friend to go to the school resource officer.

The girl denied discussing the issue with her friend, asking her only to silence any rumors.

The teenager said that at school she spoke to a student she was not close to about the details of her relationship with Dumba, and Kraushaar suggested that “it didn’t make any sense.”

Kraushaar asked the teenager if she had shown Dumba’s Instagram to her mother, as her mother had said. The teenager denied this.

He asked her if she had told any family member that she wanted to have sex with Dumba, and the teenager replied: “Yes.”
