The Great is set to return to British screens for its third and final series, bringing the stories of Catherine and Peter to a close.

Loosely based on the historical events of Catherine the Great of Russia and Emperor Peter III, The Great stars Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult and has garnered widespread praise.

Not only did critics and fans enjoy the drama, but The Great earned seven Emmy nominations and won the award for Outstanding Period Costumes.

Fanning and Hoult also received nominations for their performances in 2022, but despite this success, it has been confirmed that there will be no fourth season to look forward to.

Why was The Great cancelled?

Hulu announced that The Great was over shortly after the third season premiered in May 2023.

Rumors were circulating that the comedy-drama was originally slated for six seasons, making its cancellation all the more shocking.

Although Hulu does not disclose its viewership data, the third season failed to crack Nielsen’s top 10 list of original streaming series.

It is therefore believed that its low ratings may have played a role in The Great’s cancellation.
