Steven Moffat’s Douglas is Cancelled fable continues

Today’s Pick: Douglas is Cancelled

9pm, ITV1

Madeline Crow (Karen Gillan), Douglas’s eponymous co-host on Live at six o’clockhas so far been an enigmatic and coldly menacing presence in Steven Moffat’s cancellation fable. Now, in the penultimate episode, we get a bit of her backstory, starting as an overly serious 10-year-old who grows up fascinated by journalist uncle and comforter Douglas (Hugh Bonneville). Ten years later, we see Madeline approach Douglas at a book signing and listen to his words of encouragement about a job in media. It’s during a subsequent job interview with producer Toby (Ben Miles), conducted in Toby’s hotel suite, that the story takes a darker turn.

Wimbledon 2024

1pm, BBC One

Clare Balding previews the women’s semi-final. Ons Jabeur reached the final for the second year in a row in 2023 after coming from a set down to defeat second seed Aryna Sabalenka. Several doubles matches are also scheduled today, including the wheelchair doubles semi-finals.

The Super Vet: Noel Fitzpatrick

8 p.m., Channel 4

The talented Irish veterinarian is taking care of the last of the series of surgeries on miniature poodle Monty, who was injured by a larger dog, damaging his hip. Monty is so small that very few surgeons can perform a complex total hip replacement on such a miniature scale.

The friendly chef heads to Hexham in the North Pennines to see how to bring out the star ingredient in his classic beef dish Steak Diane. Later, he heads to Lancashire where he reveals tips for cooking with tomatoes, making roast tomatoes with whipped feta.

Susan Calman’s Big Day

9 p.m., Channel 5

The actress’s charming travel series continues as she travels to Nottinghamshire. Susan hears stories of superheroes, explores mysterious caves, romps in a marvellous example of Victorian invention and follows in the footsteps of ice skaters Torvill and Dean.

Paul Whitehouse’s Sketch Years

10 p.m., Gold

It’s a shame that Paul Whitehouse hasn’t been given a fuller series to look back at the history of British television sketch comedy. This one feels rushed and the bits are unsatisfactorily short. This is especially true now that he’s reached the 90s, the decade in which he played a central role in short-lived comedy, starring in Harry Enfield & Chums, with such memorable characters as Smashie and Nicey, Tim Nice-but-Dim and The Slobs, before moving on to The Fast ShowBut the ’90s weren’t all about him, and Whitehouse also remembers classic comedy shows such as Hit the pony And My God, courtesy of me.

Scandalous houses

10 p.m., Channel 4

The latest interior design project, a bit crazy but rather brilliant (well, it’s probably better than slavishly following the latest trends), sees Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen stepping in to Jayne and Martin, who live in a medieval castle-in-the-making in Weston-super-Mare. Plus, a former council house where each room represents a different country, and a “neon visionary utopia in London”. It looks like Piccadilly Circus.
