A traveler was apprehended by customs officials while trying to smuggle more than 100 live snakes into mainland China, according to a statement from the country’s customs authorities.

The incident occurred as the unidentified man attempted to cross the border from Hong Kong to Shenzhen. Customs officials discovered that the man had hidden six drawstring canvas bags, sealed with tape, in his trouser pockets.

Upon inspection, it was revealed that each bag contained various live snakes of different shapes, sizes and colours. A total of 104 snakes were seized, including milk snakes and corn snakes, many of which are not native to China.

A video released by customs authorities shows two customs officers examining clear plastic bags filled with wriggling reptiles. China has made significant efforts to combat animal trafficking, a persistent problem in the region.

The country’s biosecurity and disease control regulations strictly prohibit the importation of non-native species without prior authorization. Customs authorities have stressed that violators will face legal sanctions, although the specific penalty imposed on the man has not been disclosed.
