Two American women raped during horrific ordeal in Sicily

Two Italians were arrested Friday after being accused of separating and then raping two American women, according to local media.

The police said Corriere del Mezzogiorno The two men allegedly approached the two women on a scooter as they tried to use a cigarette vending machine in Syracuse, a city in Sicily. While the men pretended to offer help to the women, who were both in the countryside studying, they conspired to separate them.

The two men eventually escaped, police said. One woman was allegedly attacked near a marina, while another was abducted and taken to a house where she was raped. Both women reported their attacks to police on Thursday, and the men were taken into custody on Friday.

According to ANSA, the suspects were arrested for aggravated sexual assault.

The identities of those involved have not been released, however. Rai claims that the men are from Syracuse.

The attack came months after the rape of a Canadian woman in Palermo, Sicily’s largest city. The U.S. State Department has now issued a Level 2 travel advisory for Italy, warning of possible terrorist attacks.
